The 5th round of Grand Prix NY’s ARL

This evening had the racers battling on the midtown configuration running in the opposite direction as normal. First up this evening was the GTU (190lb) group. Quick from the outset was Alex Eickelbeck followed closely by Michael Cohen. At the end of the 12 lap qualifying session, Bobby Sayers grabbed pole with a time of 45.807.

Second was Cohen with a time of 45.865 while Eickelbeck rounded out the top three. At the drop of the green for heat 1, Sayers and Cohen set up a small gap on Eickelbeck and Andrew Wood. Wood was able to work his way past into third on the 4th lap and spent the rest of the race fending off Eickelbeck. Heat two saw Sayers, Cohen and Wood add weight to their karts and the field inverted. At the start there was quite a scrum and at the end of the first few laps the point was held by Mike Demello, with Niko and Steve Eickelbeck close behind. This is how they would finish with Demello taking his first victory of the season.

In the GTO (225lb) class Michael Cohen was fastest in qualifying, grabbing pole with a time of 46.014. Close behind was Cory Rossi and Jeff Castellano. In heat one, Cohen checked out at the start and cruised to a seven second win. Castellano and Rossi battled all race with Castellano getting the better of Rossi at the end to finish second. Heat two had these hot shoes starting from the rear with Ross Pisarkiewicz and Chris Andrews on the front row and Ed Lott and Michael Carbon on row two. At the drop of the green there were a number of incidents that bunched the field up at the top of the corkscrew – basically four rows of side by side racing. Rossi found himself under the wall and literally on top of Castellano’s kart as he was caught in the middle of the insanity. A red flag was thrown and the remains of his kart were cleaned up. A second restart had David Lapham spinning in the first turn, but that did not lead to more chaos. Ahead of all this mayhem were Pisarkiewicz, Andrews and Lott who finished as they started, with Pisarkiewicz grabbing his first win of the season.

The next round is being held on the facility’s downtown configuration.
